Studio Monitors

So what is the difference between a pair of studio monitors and regular speakers?

Studio monitors are designed to be accurate in the way they respond, home speakers are designed to make music sound good.

This of course does not mean that studio monitors cannot sound good. Think about it this way..When you look at an equalizer you see

the full spectrum of sound on its graph from low frequencies to high.

Studio monitors are designed to be flat in their frequency response.

This way what you are mixing threw your studio monitors will be accurately monitored so you can respond to the sound in the most direct way.

All monitors make sound by moving air. This means that the acoustics of your listening environment will effect the way your monitors respond.

This is why it is important that your recording and mixing rooms be acoustically accurate.

Not so long ago large and powerful monitors were used in the studio for recording and mixing.

Now it is believed that smaller 2 way near field monitors can do a better job.

To simplify things we recommend self powered studio monitors for your studio. The great thing about self powered monitors is that they have the amplification already built in. These built in amplifiers have been perfectly matched to power the speakers.

A bi-amplified pair of studio monitors has two amps for each 2 way monitor. This means that each speaker has its own amplifier.

This is certainly a good way to go.

We also recommend having more then one set of monitors to mix on. Almost every world-class recording studio will also use a very small set of speakers to test the recording on.

Some times a small set of computer monitors can help you hear how your mixes will sound on a simple system.

The car stereo test is also a good way to hear how your mixes will sound outside your studio.

The key thing to realize about studio monitors is none of them are perfect. The more you know your monitors the better you will be able to do great mixes threw them.

The best way to get to know them is to mix and listen to the final result threw several different types of systems.
